Our Chipping Warden Visitors:
We shared our Frozen Lands learning with children from Reception Class and enjoyed lots of lovely activities. We made snowflakes using pipe cleaners and beads. We explored how to make a boat for ‘Penguin Small’ using junk modelling materials and then tested them in the water tray in our Outdoor Garden.
We made Penguin Cookies, exploring measuring and weighing and then got to nibble some of them - yummy!!
Our friends from Chipping Warden joined us for snack time and we had a chance to chat and make some new friends.

In Reception Class we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum – a framework for learning and development that gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills necessary for good future progress through school and life. This stage recognises that children’s learning and development is holistic, but also the intrinsic links between this and their safeguarding and welfare requirements, all contributory factors in them reaching their full potential.
Through the EYFS, we seek to provide quality and consistency in all the learning opportunities we provide for our Reception children here at St. Loys, honouring each child as unique and planning around their individual needs and interests accordingly.
We do this through planned, purposeful play opportunities that embrace the active, intrinsic drive and thirst that children have for learning and through a mix of adult-guided and child-initiated experiences. We use the Characteristics of Effective Learning to guide our planning and promote effective teaching, using these to reflect upon the different ways children learn:
Playing and Exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’;
- Active Learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements
- Creating and Thinking Critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
There are 7 inter-connected areas of Learning & Development that shape how we choose activities and learning opportunities in our class. Of these, 3 are identified as particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity, enthusiasm for learning, build learning power and support the formation of positive relationships, and are known as Prime Areas:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
In turn, these are strengthened and applied through 4 Specific Areas of learning and development;
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts & Design
Throughout the Reception year, assessment supports teachers, children and parents as partners, in identifying how learning can be shaped, progressed, extended and ultimately how accomplished children are in relation to 17 Early Learning Goals. These provide parents, carers and teachers with a well-rounded picture of a child’s; knowledge, understanding, abilities and progress against expected levels as well as supporting children’s transition to Year 1.
We use ‘Tapestry’ – a piece of educational software that provides an online platform through which observations, comments, photographs and even videos of your child’s learning in Reception are recorded. We use these observations to support us in our knowledge of your child, the achievements and age bands they are working in for that activity with reference to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) profile, subsequently supporting us in providing the best learning environment for them that we can at St Loys. Phonics and Reading
In Reception Class we follow the Jolly Phonics programme incorporating Jolly Reading books as our Reading Scheme.
Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics and commences in the Reception Class. The scheme has actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students regularly achieve. Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing: Learning the Letter Sounds, Learning Letter Formation, Blending, Identifying sounds in Words (Segmenting) and ‘Tricky Words’.
The programme continues through school enabling the teaching of essential grammar, spelling and punctuation skills. For more information about Jolly Phonics please ask at school or go to the Jolly Phonics website www.Jollylearning.co.uk .
Creative Curriculum: Learning through Topics:
In Reception Class we choose topics that the children have shown an interest in, these then become the basis of our cross-curricula planning for the term ahead and usually last between 6-8 weeks. Topics often evolve according to where the children take them… in true spirit of a Creative Curriculum.
