Shackleton and Antarctica

Yr 5 & 6 Artwork inspired by the book 'Shackleton's Journey' by William Grill. The children chose to use watercolours, pastels or collage to create the Endurance and all the equipment and supplies that Shackleton and his men took with them.

Shackleton took 69 dogs with him on board the Endurance. They were a mongrel mix and some of them were bred with wolves. Some became favourites and were given names such as Bob, Blackie, Samson and Judge. We painted some of the dogs for our display. As we wanted our display to be seen from both sides of the glass we replicated our original painting on the reverse of the paper. We wanted our display to have movement so we hung our dogs up. Two of our girls wanted to make a sledge. They planned out their ideas and their finished sledge matched their plans very well and is very sturdy! There are more photos of the dogs in our gallery under the News tab.

Kendal Mint Cake

We wanted to take some Kendal Mint Cake on our Antarctic Acclimatisation Day, so we decided to make some - it was delicious!

Personification Poems

We have been learning about personification; giving human characteristics to something non-human, We wrote poems based on The Endurance stuck in the Antarctic Ice. Have a look at our Galleries for more personification poems.

Shack-Opoly

"Over the last few days we have been making a 'monopoly' game called Shack-opoly, it was inspired by our topic Shackleton and Antarctica. We made all of the money, Community Chest, Chance, board, property cards and the pieces."

Polar Day

We all had an amazing day when Polar Expeditions came into school. We took part in lots of activities such as ‘Blubber Gloves’, ‘Gloopy Glaciers’ and Planning our own expedition. Please have a look at and enjoy some of our photographs of the day under our Galleries Tab. This is what our children thought:

‘I loved making the Gloopy Glaciers and seeing what happens when two things react’

‘The Blubber Gloves were amazing and the kept my hands really warm’

‘It was really good using cornflour to see how the ice moves down the mountain’

‘I liked learning about Nar Whales’

‘I loved the whole day, it was educational and I learnt a lot, Taylor was brilliant’

Our Day Visit to Chipping Warden

Year 5&6 went to Chipping Warden Primary Academy recently to spend the day taking part in some activities linked to our Frozen Lands topic work. We had a lovely day and it was really nice spending time with the other children. We did some visual recounts of our Polar Day, we made some Shackleton stew, we sang sea shanties and learnt how to tie knots and we also did some artwork. Here's what some of our children thought:

‘I liked the doing the snowflake artwork with the children from Chipping Warden’

‘It was really interesting learning how to tie knots and sing some sea shanties’

‘I enjoyed telling the children from Chipping Warden about our visual recounts and they enjoyed doing them with us’

‘The cooking was great fun and we also learnt about what they would have eaten and why’

‘The visual recounts were great to do’

‘It was fun spending time with the other children from Chipping Warden and I knew some of them from out of school’

Yr 5&6 Maths Stars! We investigated factor pairs for 360 and then used them to measure angles and draw with accuracy to produce geometric designs.

Visiting Author Julia Jarman:

At the beginning of November, the author Julia Jarman came to visit our school. She spoke to the children about how she plans books, from first thoughts to signing it off with the publisher. The children were really inspired by her explanations, especially when they heard that she often needs 6 or 7 drafts before she is happy with her story. As a result, the Year 6 upstairs literacy group, taught by Miss Nupen and Mrs White, have been planning their own book. In the clip below they explain how they first had the ideas, discussed them together and refined them through editing and redrafting.

This year Year 5/6 have been enjoying exploring the topics of  'The Hobbit', 'The Queen's 90th Birthday' and 'The Olympics'.
